In recognition of World Community Land Trust Day, the City of Madison and Madison Area Community Land Trust (MACLT) are highlighting their shared commitment to expanding permanently affordable homeownership in Madison via the Community Land Trust (CLT) model.
Continuing their ongoing partnership that has added seven new homes to MACLT in the last year, the City of Madison is supporting the creation of 24 new permanently affordable homes in the coming year—12 homes in the Owl Creek neighborhood in southeast Madison and 12 homes at the Voit Farm property off Milwaukee St. This new investment reflects the City’s and MACLT’s continued dedication to expanding equitable access to homeownership and strengthening long-term housing affordability for Madison residents.
MACLT’s permanently affordable homes have supported more than 131 Madison families since its founding 35 years ago. The CLT model not only offers the benefits of affordable homeownership and wealth building to current homeowners, but preserves those benefits permanently for future generations of owners, ensuring permanent affordability while supporting community stability.
The City of Madison recognizes MACLT as a proven model for keeping homes permanently affordable while building long-term community stability and wealth-building opportunities for lower- and moderate-income households.
“Our expanding partnership is a leading example of the city embracing innovative tools and making smart investments to ensure access to affordable homeownership in an increasingly challenging market. We celebrate World CLT Day in 2026 with gratitude to the public for supporting our work and a commitment to delivering an even greater impact for Madison families in the year ahead.” — Mason Cavell, Executive Director, Madison Area Community Land Trust
“ Community Land Trusts are a critical component of our strategy to provide first time homebuyer opportunities in Madison. Our partnership with MACLT allows them to grow their portfolio of permanently affordable homes, which provide opportunities for families and stability for neighborhoods. I look forward to continuing our collaboration and providing Madison residents with even more housing choices.” — Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway, City of Madison
These 24 new homes add to MACLT’s growing portfolio of permanently affordable housing across Dane County and reinforce the importance of public investment in shared equity homeownership models.
World Community Land Trust Day, observed globally on Friday, May 15, recognizes the impact of Community Land Trusts in creating permanently affordable housing, strengthening communities, and ensuring that land remains a shared community resource rather than a speculative commodity.
